LIMA SHANTY TOWN TOUR

     Haku’s most popular tour!
On this walking tour you will get the opportunity to see how a large majority of Lima’s population truly lives. We at Haku Tours want you to see ‘the real’ Lima. Take a walk up the famous yellow stairs and along narrow cute roads all the way to the hilltops and discover beautiful city views of Villa El Salvador, one of Lima’s largest districts. During the tour, we will also visit a local kindergarten, silverware factory and the friendly families from this nice community. The town’s huge dimensions and breathtaking views are impressive for any visitor.
Itinerary:
Upon arrival, you will be told about security precautions and some basic guidelines to follow while on the tour. While we know ‘shanty towns’ do have a reputation, we want you to feel 100% safe at all times.
While you slowly make your way to the base of the hill, our guide will explain a little about the community and its developments, the urbanization projects, politics, religion and how Haku helps in the area. Gradually, you will begin your journey up the ‘yellow stairs’, pause for a few pictures of the amazing views in greater Lima, get a glimpse into homes, and interact with neighbors and families we meet during this local life experience.
Stopping along the way to take photos of typical homes, see first-hand the smiling children and hard-working families of Lima. You will meet a local craftsman who produces beautiful hand-made silverware and can even purchase his silverware to support the local community!
On your way down the hill, you will visit a local kindergarten (*not open on weekends but you might meet some of these children while they are playing on the streets), where you have the opportunity to be a part of the local activities, such as volleyball or football, with the local children.
Highlights: Local market, Shanty Town walking tour, local craftsman, panoramic views of Lurin Valley, west coast and Lima city, local tour guide, customized tour, community kitchen, meeting the female community leaders, local kindergarten visit and cute street dogs.
Note: Villa El Salvador is the specific Shanty Town that Haku Tours sponsors. If you wish to make donations of any kind, please contact us today!
To see the work Haku Tours and our wonderful clients are doing to help these people, please visit our ‘PROJECTS’ page.
PLEASE NOTE: In the past, the Shanty Towns suffered a lot of abuse from foreigners. any children got stolen from these communities and their families. For this reason, during all visits, a Police Officer will be a part of the group to ensure the safety of the community’s children.
We recommend that you wear colorful clothing because locals found it welcoming. Dark colors are synonymous with bad luck or a bad omen to the locals. Please do not bring any kind of big bags and small cameras only. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat to make your tour most comfortable. Please take a bottle of water with you and spare battery for your camera.
