BIZARRE GAMARRA TOUR!

What is Gamarra?

Gamarra is the first textile conglomerate in the country and also the first commercial center of Lima. In Gamarra one can find all the phases of the commercial value chain of the textile sector:
designers, producers and transport . Distributors (sale to indirect consumer, transport of garments in large quantities) Marketers (direct consumer sale, attraction of consumers to stores "jaladores", selling products on the street)

Gamarra is then a textile cluster of supply for textile companies, and also a shopping center in itself where 60% of the purchases made by Peruvian consumers take place. Just as Paris has Sentier and New York has the Garment District, Lima has Gamarra!

Gamarrarra was formed in the 50s product of the large migrations of people from the mountains of Peru to the city of Lima in search of a better life.
It has been developed mainly by Andean migrants who became entrepreneurs and knew how to take advantage of the increased demand for clothing by the poorest classes in the city.
In this sense, one of the most important social significance of Gamarra is that it has allowed democratizing access to clothes.
At the end of the 20th century, access to clothing with a certain level of design was available only to the highest Peruvian classes.
But Gamarra, with its logic of copying and mass production, managed to shorten the gap between rich and poor by putting into the hands of the humblest classes imitations of fashionable clothes at affordable prices.

WITCH MARKET

During the migration from the Andes to Lima, many people brought with them their ancestral traditions, their medicine and beliefs!

Even many locals have never heard of the market, which is within the Gamarra Market and just outside the Gamarra train station.  Keep an eye out for vendors selling python skins, and you have found it. The focus here is on the traditional folk medicine that is widely practiced among indigenous groups and the greater Peruvian society.

You’ll find many of health supplements are for sale here. You can find collagen, spirulina, maca root, and aphrodisiacs . Also for sale are palo santo, dried llama fetus, divination cards, charms, soaps, perfumes, crystals and all sorts of things to ward off evil and to attract good fortune.
